History of the Pain Clinic Support Group

In February 1995, three nurses from the hospital sent out a joint letter with attached questionnaire to pain clinic patients informing them of their intention to set up a support group for the Pain Clinic. Based on the replies received, an initial meeting of the proposed group was held on the 19th June 1995, at the Howarth Unit at Scarborough Hospital. The meeting overwhelmingly supported the proposed suggestion and on that night, the Pain Support Group of Scarborough Hospital was founded. During the first year the nurses organised monthly meetings but control of the group was finally handed over to patients at the June 1996 A.G.M. meeting. A management committee was formed and under the capable direction of its first chairman, Henry Rowlands, the Pain Clinic Support Group continued to flourish; meeting every third Monday of the month at the Howarth Unit.

To the question, “Why did those three nurses, Christine Wilson, Sue Tindall and Karin Walsh, think a support group was necessary?” The answer only makes complete sense to those unfortunate enough to suffer from chronic pain. A more generalised answer may be found in the words of the Groups first Chairman.

“The purpose of the Group, from its conception, is to provide a Social Contact Forum for patients of Dr. D.F.Jones’ Pain Clinic, enabling them to meet, discuss and learn about the various ways each member has of coping with pain associated with their particular medical condition. We are all aware that pain is a very personal and private problem which we have to bear. Some are very good at managing pain, either because of a high pain threshold, or a positive and resolute determination not to let it effect their daily lives. However, it can become a burden that is extremely difficult to cope with alone. Not all patients are fortunate in having a supportive partner to help them cope with fluctuations in pain, depression, guilt, self-doubt or frustrations that long term chronic pain can induce. By being a member of the Pain Clinic Support Group. You will have access to the collective resources of members’ to fall back on……”
